Bem-vindo!
I am an assistant professor of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University. My research interests broadly include 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century Portuguese, Luso-African, and Brazilian literature, though I am especially interested in comparative literature of the Americas, nature and literature, and masculinity and gender studies. My current research project examines the construction of heterosexual masculinity and the shifting roles of men in contemporary Brazilian literature.
Besides an active research agenda, I am committed to excellence in teaching, which I believe fuels not only a strong language and literature program but my own research as well. The purpose of this website is to present my teaching philosophy, teaching experience, teaching competencies, and pedagogical training. Feel free to explore the site by clicking on the links at the top of this page, or contact me by email at rex_nielson(at)byu(dot)edu with any comments, questions, or feedback.
